What We've been up to...

Comparing the properties of materials

In science, we have been learning about everyday materials. Today, we were comparing their physical properties using a Venn diagram. We thoroughly enjoyed this activity so some of us continued this in provision!

Counting in 2s

Oh no! Miss Cooper's washing has blown away! Today we helped to find lots of pairs of socks and pegged these back on the washing line. Then we counted in 2s to find out how many socks there are altogether. Counting in 2s is much quicker than counting in 1s!

What do you want to be when you are older?

In English, we have started reading Julian is a Mermaid. We thought about what we want to be when we are older. We wrote our sentences on a post it note. Miss Cooper set us the challenge of including 'and' in our sentence. We all completed the challenge! Lots of us read out our wish to the class.

Skipping!

Skipping with Skipping School! Gail taught us the first three levels of skipping. Some of managed to skip backwards! We finished our session with a game - we had to run through the big skipping rope.

Easter Garden

In RE, we have been learning about the Christian story of Easter. Today, we worked together in groups to make Easter Gardens. We discussed what the different parts of the garden represent in the story.

Ready Set Glow

We enjoyed wearing our light/neon coloured clothes and using neon equipment! We had lots of fun playing games and working as a team.

Acting using instruments!

In music, we have been looking at the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We have selected instruments to appropriately represent the different characters and what they are doing in the story. For example, some of us decided to use maracas and tambourines for Little Red Riding Hood. When she was walking through the forest, we played these slowly and quietly. When she was talking to 'Grandma', we played these quicker and louder as she became nervous. Some of us decided to use a symbol to represent the woodcutter saving the day!

Paired Maths

Today we teamed up with Walliams class to answer some problem solving and reasoning questions! The children from Walliams class supported us to read the questions and helped us if we were unsure what to do. They were great teachers!

Sliders

In DT, we made our own slider! We followed instructions and used equipment, such as rulers and scissors. We loved moving our train along the track.

Nurse

In PSHE, we have been learning about how to keep ourselves safe at school and outside of school. Today, we had a visitor - a nurse! She explained how she keeps everyone safe.

Poetry Performance

This week in English, we have been looking at various poems. Our favourite poem was written by our class author, Michael Rosen. We worked as a class to learn the poem, as well as adding in some of our own verses. We hope you enjoy our performance!

World Book Day

We had lots of fun dressing up for World Book Day! We enjoyed lots of activities - watching a live lesson on BBC Bitesize, showing everyone our costumes and enjoying a few stories with Walliams class!

Boogie Bounce

We had an exciting PE treat today! We had lots of fun bouncing and moving in time to music - even Miss Cooper joined in!

Christmas party

Rosen and Hargreaves had lots of fun at their Christmas party. We wore our party clothes and played music statues, musical bumps and pass the parcel. We had so much fun!

Nativity

We have been learning about the Christian story of the Nativity in RE. We had lots of fun acting out the story and singing lots of songs. Our teachers and parents/carers were really proud of us!

Animal poo!

In science, we have been learning about animals. Today, we were working out what different animals eat by look at their poo! Some animals are carnivores (they eat meat), some animals are herbivores (they eat plants) and some animals are omnivores (they eat meat and plants). We had lots of fun!

Photography

In computing, we have been learning about how to take photographs on iPads. The most important rule is to key the iPad still, otherwise you get blurry pictures! Today, we went outside and took pictures of physical features (we have been learning about this in geography).

Shape Hunt

In maths, we have been learning about shapes. Today we went on a shape hunt in our outside area and in the classroom to see what 3D shapes we could find. We made a tally while we looked, then wrote the total number after we had finished.

Fireworks

In history, we learnt about Bonfire Night. We learnt about the story of Guy Fawkes, then created our own firework pictures!

Halloween Party

We had lots of fun dressing up and playing halloween games!

Halloween Activities

Over the past couple of weeks, we have enjoyed lots of halloween activities! In art, we made ghosts with paper chains. We were great at drawing straight lines with rulers, then cutting along the lines. Outside, we used our senses to explore inside a pumpkin. We discussed how it felt, smelt and looked.

Harvest Moon Poem

Harvest Poem

Harvest Song

During English and science lessons we have been learning all about Harvest. To support our learning, we have been looking at Harvest poems and songs. We hope you enjoy our performances!

Getting to know our areas

During this half term, we have spent lots time of time getting to know the areas in both Year 1 classrooms. We have particularly enjoyed making models in the arts and crafts area and reading lots of stories in the reading area!

Ordinal Numbers

In maths, we have been learning about ordinal numbers (the position of something, such as first, second, third, etc). To consolidate our learning, we went outside and took part in many relay races. We enjoyed working as a team to finish first!

Whole School Maths Challenge

We took part in a whole school maths challenge today! This was very tricky as each row and column had to add together to equal 10. We worked as a team, using Numicon and cubes to help us. We all solved the challenge!

Adam Bushnell

During English, we had a visit from local author Adam Bushnell! He talked about the story we are currently focusing on in English - Our Class is a Family. We discussed how knights show which family they belong to. We created our own shield and were knighted with our own knight names. We had so much fun!
