"Mathematics may not teach us to add love or subtract hate, but it gives us hope that every problem has a solution."
Our Maths lead, Mrs Storey, says...
Leading Maths in our school is an absolute pleasure! I love to see how much the children and teachers enjoy their Maths lessons every single day. From using concrete manipulative to solving complex, abstract problems, we love it all! Every Maths lesson includes some time to recap learning, time for new learning and most importantly, times to keep active. Maths may not be everyone's favourite subject, but is my aim to ensure everyone leaves Coxhoe Primary School as a confident mathematician who is ready for life after primary school. Please make sure you visit me with your amazing maths work - it brightens up my day!
Our Year 6 Maths Ambassadors say...
Hi, we are the Maths Ambassadors. Maths in our school is taught in a fun and active way and we love it! Whenever we aren't sure of anything, our teachers will help us to understand the problem and improve on it. It's important to learn Maths because our mathematical skills are crucial in larger community.
Children from across school say...
"I like paired maths because when we are doing it, the younger children always have a smile on their face,"
"Active Maths is my favourite, I love playing the different games."
“In maths there are lots of challenges and it helps me to be resilient.”
“I really like doing active maths.”
“I enjoy the questions in maths because they are based on real life things.”
“I really like those (base 10) because you can stack the ones up to make a 10 and it helps you count in tens.”
“I like how it helps me to do things when I’m older so things won’t be difficult.”
“Bigger people could help us in paired maths and I liked it.”
Curriculum Intent
At Coxhoe Primary School, we view mathematics as a journey: a journey that is accessible to all and will maximise children’s mathematical concepts, skills and thinking strategies to be successful in our modern world. We intend that this is achieved through exploration, clarification, practice and application over time.

In school, we also use a lot resources to support our learning, some of which we can share with you at home. As well as concrete resources such as base 10, counters and bead strings, we also rely on a lot of paper based resources to support our written methods. If you would like any resources such as hundred squares, place value grids or number lines to support your child at home, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Mrs Storey.
Supporting parents to support their children with Maths
We understand that many parents feel like maths has changed and that it’s sometimes difficult to keep up to date with modern teaching methods. Please don't worry as there are lots of resources out there to help and staff are always willing to chat through any questions or concerns.
