Careers - Our Vision

We aim to ensure that our children believe that they can achieve ambitious goals in order to be a success in any career they wish to follow

We know that even at the young age of three or four, children are already starting to form their first aspirations. By six they are starting to have opinions on what they think they can or can’t do in the future. By the time they’re 10, young people start to make decisions which could go on to limit their future options.

At Coxhoe Primary School, we believe that all children have the potential to flourish, reach their full potential and be whatever they aspire to be in life. Our key curriculum drivers underpin this belief:

  • Our curriculum is driven by challenging stereotypes and building cultural capital where our children have the knowledge and experiences to be successful and make choices without limits.
  • Our curriculum promotes the importance of being aspirational where our children believe that they can achieve ambitious goals in order to have a successful career.

What does this look like in our school?

  • Making meaningful links to the world of work within curriculum lessons
  • Providing children with opportunities to learn from real world contexts, interact with employers and experience workplaces
  • Enabling children to make links between what they are learning in the classroom and the practical application of that knowledge (and skills)
  • Ensuring that children begin to understand the skills required in the workplace and have opportunities to develop these
  • Helping children understand the opportunities available to them in the local and regional labour market, and variety of pathways into these roles, including through further and higher education.

Gatsby Primary Enterprise Benchmarks & Framework

  1. A stable careers programme (GB1)  - Every school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance
  2.  Learning from career and labour market information (GB2) - Every pupil, and their parents, should have access to good-quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities.
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil (GB3)  - Pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each pupil. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.
  4.  Linking curriculum learning to careers (GB4) - All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. For example, STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.
  5. Encounters with employers and employees (GB5)  - Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.
  6. Experiences of workplaces (GB6)  - Every pupil should have first-hand experiences* of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities and expand their networks.
  7. Encounters with further and higher education (GB7) - All pupils should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.
  8. Personal guidance (GB8) - Every pupil should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a career’s adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level.

What is Labour Market Information (LMI) and why is it important?

Labour Market Information (LMI) tells you about the jobs that are available in the area that you live in.

It's useful to help you learn about future jobs in the local area (the north east), understand the skills you need for certain roles and the demand for future employment.

Careerometer

Careerometer can be used to explore and compare key information about occupations, help you learn about different occupations and identify potential careers.
It provides information about pay, weekly hours of work and future employment prospects for different occupations, as well as description of the occupation.
Simply type in the title of the job you are interested in and the widget provides a series of options from which you can select the most relevant to you. You can then look up another two occupations and compare. You can also select ‘display the UK average’ and compare the information with the occupation you have selected.

Regional Winners!: Year 6 entry from Rose and Poppy

In summer term, Sunderland Empire Theatre came into school to talk to KS2 about careers in the theatre.

Donna from the NHS Emotional Resilience Team came to talk to us in assembly about her career and how she helps children and young people.

Our Very First Careers Fair

This half term we had our very first Coxhoe Primary School Careers Fair. Ten volunteers from different sectors/companies chatted to our children throughout the afternoon of Friday 9th June about the companies that they work for and their careers. The children asked lots of thoughtful questions, as always, and were inspired by the people who they spoke to. All children across the school dressed up as the career they want to be as they get older.

Our children in Year 2 and Year 5 took part in a Flat Stan first aid workshop with Garry. This workshop taught our children vital and essential first aid life skills.

Year 1 had great fun being musicians during their 'Little Fingers' sessions with Durham Music Service!

·      We read books about other people’s careers and it is really fun to learn about other people!

·      People come and visit and tell us all about their career

·      We talk about it in French

·      We sometimes watch videos

·      In places we have visited

·      We have an iPad then and we search up different careers and then we see what they do

·      We learn about what jobs people want to have when they are older

·      We chat about the job that we want to be when we’re older

·      We have visitors for ensembles and career fairs and people come to class to talk about their careers with us

·      In PSHE we learn about stereotypes in certain jobs

·      We talk about it in assembly

·      We learn about speaking other languages like speaking French and Spanish

·      We learnt about Laurie Cunningham in Black History month about his football careers

·      We have watched videos about someone and created a fact-file about them.

·      On careers day I learned about the swat team

·      A lesson that my parents taught in school

·      In each subject we learn more about careers

·      We draw the careers we want to do

·      We learn about gender stereotypes in jobs

·      In forest school we learn about how to take care of animals so I know how to do that job.

·      We play games and read books.

·      In history we all learn about the Wright brothers who were pilots on the first flight.

·      That girls and boys can do any jobs

·      We talk about what everybody wants to be when they’re older and write about what you want to be when your older

·      In all the subjects we learn about careers

Take a look at what our children told us when we asked the question 'How could we improve your knowledge about careers?'...

·      Read more books and have more lessons about careers

·      Learn more about a variety of careers

·      You can’t because it’s already great :)

·      Nothing

·      More in lessons

·      Tell us a wider range and more jobs not just the well-known jobs

·      Do more lessons about careers or read books about it

·      By teaching us about more businesses

·      You have to do a job for the day with your friends

·      By doing a hunt to find the different careers

·      More careers days

·      Inviting in more careers people

·      Acting out different careers

·      When we go on school trips to places talk more about careers

·      You could talk about old jobs in history

·      By going into more detail on what they do

·      Showing us more rare jobs

·      More fun careers events

·      Mare variety of careers to learn about. Expand it as much as possible as everyone has different ways in life so they should know what is needed for their future

·      Keep doing lots of assemblies

·      I would improve it by speaking to a person with a very good career it will make my day and it will make me know more about good careers

·      Pretend to be them

·      We could do them in some subjects more often.

·      Learning about new careers and how any gender can be any career

·      Having people come in and talk about football

·      Learn how college works

·      Having people come in to talk about Scuba-diving

·      Learning about it more using videos online

·      By watching a vet help an animal

·      Lean more about stereotypes

·      I would like to know more about marine biology

·      Learn about business development

·      By making a careers challenge.

Feedback from our volunteers:

  • We absolutely love attending these events - thank you for having us again.
  • I was very impressed with how engaged the children were with the event and in our games. The children especially impressed me with their maths skills and willingness to have a try at some of our trickier questions involving percentages. The school has such a welcoming feel to it, I look forward to next year.

  • The students were all well engaged, very friendly and polite throughout all interactions across our stalls. All of the staff who attended have said how much they enjoyed talking to the students and answering some great questions they were asked. Thank you to all staff involved who also made us feel very welcome. We would love to be part of future activities with the school to continue to help inspire our future generations.

  • I was really impressed by how polite and kind the pupils were. They engaged extremely well with the activity I brought along and asked lots of questions. I would love to come to the school again in the future to do more activities or events – thank you for having me!
  • It is impressive to see so many young children are enthusiastic for finding out about various career, their questions were very interesting

Our whole school text theme in spring term is careers. In Reception and Year 1 the children are reading What Will I Be? by Frances Stickley and Lucy Fleming. In Years 2-6, they are reading What Jobs Could You Do? by Catherine Barr and Ana Gomez. Watch this space for some of our children's fabulous work!
