Coxhoe Primary school are now an accredited school for supporting young carers, having achieved the gold award for the Young Carers Neighbourhood Charted. The school focuses on early identification of young carers and provide dedicated support with the help of the young carers lead - Miss Armstrong.
 
What is a young carer?
Young carers are children and young people who help provide care in families where someone has an illness, a disability, a mental health issue or for someone who has an alcohol or drug problem. The person they help care for might be a parent, a sibling, a grandparent or other relative. Young carers may provide personal care, they may cook, clean, pay bills, shop, give medication, offer emotional support or provide care for siblings. It is estimated that there are over 1 million young carers in the UK – which equates to 2 per classroom.
